The Western Union Company, Western Union Foundation and Western Union Agents Respond to Cyclone in India with Support for Relief Efforts

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. – October 17, 2013 – Following through on its commitment to support the communities it serves, The Western Union Company, with the support of the Western Union Foundation, today announced US$45,000 in total support through direct grants and the Western Union Agent Gift Match Program to help families and communities affected by the cyclone that impacted India’s eastern coast.

The Western Union Foundation is making a grant of US$25,000 to Save the Children to support the organization’s immediate response activities, which include providing emergency materials, meals and water to cyclone victims.

Additionally, through the Western Union Agent Gift Match Program, Western Union Principal Agents Paul Merchants Limited, Transcorp International Limited, and Weizmann Forex Limited are donating a combined US$10,000, which will be matched by the Western Union Foundation for a combined donation of US$20,000.

To encourage and support employee philanthropy, through October 25, 2013, The Western Union Company will match employee donations to the Western Union Foundation for cyclone relief efforts in India, two-for-one for U.S.-based employees, and three-for-one for employees outside the U.S.  Each employee can donate up to US$25,000 per calendar year.

Employees – and consumers worldwide – can give online by using the “Donate Now” button at www.WesternUnionFoundation.org, and selecting the “India Disaster Relief” option.

Save the Children is responding to the needs of thousands of children and families in the area, providing shelter, household supplies and access to clean water.  “We know that children are always the most vulnerable in any emergency,” said Save the Children President & CEO Carolyn Miles.  “Families who have lost their homes will be exposed to the elements and will lack basic water and sanitation systems, so children will experience more health risks.  We will also be looking at ways we can ensure food supplies, as many crops were lost in the storm surge, and provide safe places for children to play and learn.”

“The cyclone in India has caused significant flooding, with initial reports indicating the evacuation of more than 800,000 people,” said Western Union Foundation President, Patrick Gaston. “Our thoughts are with the people of India. Over the coming days, we will be working with Western Union Agents, employees and Save the Children to provide support for initiatives that will help the area recover and rebuild.”
